President Muhammadu Buhari has been petitioned to urgently intervene by preventing the forceful eviction of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in WASU IDP camp in Apo District of Abuja or any other camp across the country.

A non-governmental organisation, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, in an open letter by its executive director, Tokunbo Mumuni to the President, said the threat to evict the people from the camps contravenes natural justice and the provisions of the constitution.

In the letter dated 7 August 2015, SERAP expressed concern that unless the president urgently intervenes, the IDPs may be rendered homeless and left without water, food or other critical assistance.

To solve the problem, SERAP asked the President to introduce measures to provide legal security of tenure to IDPs and take immediate steps to adopt and effectively implement the IDP Policy to ensure full compliance with international law including the Kampala Convention.
