ASABA—A Commissioner in the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Dr Michael Onyia, has said that the commission will not relent in sanctioning service providers whose performance falls below expectation.

He urged the media to showcase the positive aspect of the Global System Mobile, GSM, telecommunication service providers rather than focus only on their challenges.

Onyia, at the 74th edition of a consumer outreach programme, organised by NCC in Asaba, Delta State, charged consumers to explore opportunities available in the Information  Communication Technology, ICT, in the country.

He said that focusing on the areas of strength would enable consumers key into opportunities to better their living.

Saying that the challenges of the service providers were obvious, he said the NCC has set up Key Performance Indicators, KPI, which it would strictly monitor to ensure that consumers get improved services in the country.

He said that the cardinal provision of the NCC Act was to ensure that consumers were not exploited by the service providers.

He said: “Although we know the challenges of the service providers, NCC has insisted that consumers must be happy by ensuring that all service providers establish functional care centres where consumers’ complaints are addressed.

“The media should also showcase the positive side of the service providers to enable the consumers take advantage of the ICT.”

On his part, Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr Tony Ojobo, noted that successes have been recorded since the inception of GSM in the country.

He urged Nigerians to take advantage of the global market through the online businesses made available by the telecommunication networks in the country,

Ojobo said though there are challenges, there is no doubt that so much value has been added to the lives of average Nigerians through telecommunication.
