MUHAMMADU BUHARI

MAIDUGURI —The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has been called upon to pursue with vigour the Green Shield Programme, GSP, that will fight desertification which has been ravaging the Northern part of the country.
Alhaji Muhammad Tsofo, a frontline All Progressives Congress, APC stalwart from Yobe State made the call in an interview in Maiduguri.
He said that pursuing the Green Shield Programme with vigour will not only halt the rapidly advancing desert in the North but help create employment opportunities for members of the immediate communities if implemented to its logical conclusion.
He advised that for the project to be successful, productive boreholes should be drilled at an interval of three to four kilometres so that adulate water supply would be guaranteed for the watering of planted seedlings.
Tsofo further advised that enough attendants should be employed to cater for the seedlings.
He observed that unless the Green Shield Programme was pursued with all seriousness, the Northern states will soon be overrun by sand dunes.
