Educationists task Buhari on quality teachers

Disturbed by the pathetic nature of our educational system, educationists in University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, have called on the incoming Government of Mohammadu Buhari to make policies that will bring about quality teachers into the system, adding that, he should also invest massively in education, in order to see improvement and upliftment in primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education in Nigeria

Our educational system, according to them, is in bad shape and has a lot of problems which the incoming government needs to address to give Nigeria children sound education.

Lecturers in Educational Foundations Department, UNN, noted that if education in Nigeria is to experience a massive growth, priority should be placed on preparing and recruiting quality teachers, provision of learning facilities, free education and curriculum delivery.

According to Dr. Sam Ugwuoke, “Number one thing to do is to improve teacher quality at all levels of the educational system.” Stating, “What we are seeing now are those who do not pass the tutelage of education teaching in classrooms. How would they be able to teach well? Some teachers are even given subjects they do not know anything about to teach”

He also noted, “When you go to primary and secondary schools, you see teachers teaching two classes. How can the person do well teaching two classes at the same time? Education is not taken serious in Nigeria. If you want to make education very good in Nigeria and to be in the same state or level with other nations globally, you start from the teachers.”
