KADUNA—A group, the Arewa Youth and Women Coalition for Good Governance, has canvassed zoning of the Speakership position of the House of Representatives to the North-East, arguing that the move will serve as compensation for the area which has been ravaged by several years of Boko Haram insurgency.

The group, which held a procession along some major streets in Kaduna yesterday also proposed Hon. Yakubu Dogara, a third-term member of the lower chamber of the National Assembly, from Bauchi State, for the position of Speaker.

“Our decision to support Hon. Dogara is informed by the need to give a sense of belonging to the North-East region, which has been ravaged by insurgency for several years,” the group said.

Chairman of the coalition, Auwal Zakariya, who spoke with reporters at the end of the rally further justified its position, saying that the North-East made the second largest contribution to the electoral fortunes of the All Progressives Congress, APC, during the presidential and National Assembly polls.

According to Zakariya, “the North-East came second after the North-West and we are sure it would have been ahead but for the violence in the area.”
