OWERRI—Tragedy was averted, yesterday in Owerri, Imo State capital, as a rainstorm blew off the roof of Dan Anyiam Stadium and Grasshoppers International Handball Complex.

Vanguard investigation revealed that apart from the students of Rochas Foundation College, Owerri, who are representing the state in the Nestlé/Milo Secondary School Basketball Championships, there were other people in training at the time the rain started.

It was also gathered that when the rain, which was accompanied by violent storm increased, the trainees and their coaches scampered into nearby shelters.

The rainstorm also destroyed public and private buildings, billboards and cash crops.
