lagos—THE Lagos State House of Assembly has directed that all tankers and trucks parked on the Apapa- Oshodi Expressway be removed with immediate effect.

The House gave the directives at a plenary session earlier this week.

Speaking, a member representing Somolu constituency 1, Rotimi Olowo who moned the motion, said, in order to safeguard the lives and properties of Lagosians, especially those who live and work in Apapa and its environs, concerned authorities, including NUPENG and Commissioner of Police should call the relevant bodies to order.

In his contribution, Lanre Ogunyemi representing Ojo ll, said “The issue calls for serious concern, adding that Oshodi- Apapa expressway experience is harrowing and sad one and should be condemned by all.

He observed that Governor babatunde Fashola had visited the area severally to appeal to the tanker drivers to maintain decorum and strict compliance with the state traffic Law.

He lamented that in spite of the situation in Apapa expressway, the FG has not taken any concrete step to abate the situation.

He however urged the State government to do everything possible to redeem the situation and come to the aid of Lagosians by curtailing the unnecessary hardship that has affected both individual and the state’s economy, trade and business.

Meanwhile, the deputy majority leader of the House, Lola Akande in her submission solicited for an enforcement of the state’s existing traffic law towards bringing the situation under control.

According to her, “offenders should be made to face the law, saying that this can only be achieved if the enforcement machinery is strengthened to bring the culprits to justice.

“The solution to the problems lies in effective enforcement of the State traffic law. If one offender is prosecuted diligently according to the law, others will comply.”
