Doctors in protest march over murder of colleague

As the wave of kidnap of medical doctors storms Rivers State, the Nigerian Medical Association has observed a protest, March in Sorrow, to the State Security Service (SSS) and Rivers Police Command, in honour of their colleague who Wednesday, died in the hands of his abductors, and in respect of the series of kidnap of doctors.

The organization whose mood was sorrowful, yesterday, walked the streets of Port Harcourt to register their fears and challenges with the security agencies in the state. Recently, there has been series of kidnap cases of doctors in the state. About four doctors have been kidnapped in the state. Dr. Azubuike Okara was Thursday, shot and taken away at Emohua General Hospital.

It would be recalled that one Dr. Sam Okpara who was abducted last week at his private hospital in D-Line, Port Harcourt was, Wednesday, killed and his body dumped at a cassava farm in Borokiri area of Port Harcourt, amidst other cases of kidnap of doctors in the state.

The Chairman of NMA Rivers State Dr. Furo Green, while relating the issue to the Rivers CP, said doctors have been facing series of assaults in the hands of violent men, especially kidnappers in the state.

Green said, “we stand to condemn kidnap anywhere in the world, but the cases of kidnap have increased in the state and in the last two week it appears to have been directed at doctors. We have been targeted and we do not know the reason.”
