LAGOS—GOVERNORSHP candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, yesterday, said that the presence of security agents during the general election would guarantee large turnout of voters.
Agbaje, who also took a swipe at the alleged involvement of the military in the Ekiti State election, advised Nigerians not to trust everything they see or hear from politicians, adding that politicians were known to play all kinds of games during elections.
Also, Lagos socialite, Erelu Abiola Dosumu urged women to wake up from their slumber and rise up to their responsibility as nation builders , adding that the postponement of the elections had beamed light on the lies some politicians told earlier.
The duo spoke in Lagos at an interactive session with governorship aspirants in the state, which was convened by the Coalition of Concerned Women for Good Governance, CCWGG.
Agbaje said: “The court cannot mean that where there is security issue that troops should just sit down in the barracks because it is election day then they should not participate. I think we have to be realistic about the situation that we have in our country and even if we look at precedents, you will find that the troops have been used in previous elections and we have not seen them do anything untold. We have not seen any attack but at the end of the day all the parties congratulated the troops that they had done well.”
Agbaje who said that the controversy about military not participating in elections was part of the games played every time before elections added, “Maybe it is part of propaganda. But the reality is that for people to come out, evidence have shown that the turn out in any election where the troops have been used had been much higher.”
