House help docked over N5.5m jewelleries theft

Lagos—A teenage domestic house help, Mercy Odita, 18, has been charged before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court over alleged theft of gold jewellery worth N5,523,000, property of her employer, one Ngosi Okeke.

Okere said the incident took place on February 10 and is punishable under Section 409 and 285 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos Stated of Nigeria, 2011.

The law prescribes seven years imprisonment for servants convicted of stealing their employer’s money.

However, the defendant denied the allegations, but Magistrate A. T. Omoyele admitted the defendant to N500,000 bail, with two responsible sureties in like sum and adjourned the matter to March 23.
