The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Johnson Olawunmi, has tasked corps members to sustain the credibility the scheme has given to the election process in the country.
He gave this charge in Lagos while addressing the 2,018 corps members of 2014 Batch B Stream II deployed to Lagos State at the Iyana Ipaja orientation camp.
Olawunmi who lauded the 2011 corps members who participated in the election process, urged all corps members who will pick up assignments in 2015 elections to maintain the same feat of credibility.
He said: “The good news of the 2011 election process in Nigeria was the reliabile participation of corps members.”
The Director-General, however, urged the corps members to shun all forms of inducements by politicians, adding that the over 160 million Nigerians are looking forward to a repeat of the excellent participation of corps members in the 2015 elections.
His words: “Election in Nigeria has continued to gain credibility because of the calibre of corps members involved in the process. Next election is the 2015 general elections. All of you will be called out to be part of the election.
“As good youths who have seen the four walls of universities and tertiary institutions and are certified fit in character and learning, we expect the highest standards from you.”
He assured the corps members that adequate training and election materials will be provided before and during the elections, saying that allowances due would be paid as well.
Olawunmi charged them to ensure absolute neutrality in elections as unbiased election officials by not accepting any form of unnecessary niceties from politicians.
The State Coordinator, Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi earlier in her welcome address urged the corps members to take advantage of the skills acquisition programme as fortress against unemployment in the country.
