Twelve dead in eastern Ukraine despite truce – officials

Nine Ukrainian soldiers and at least three civilians died in eastern Ukraine over the past day despite a ceasefire, officials said Monday.

“Nine soldiers were killed and 27 wounded in all,” said National Security and Defence Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko, adding that some of the losses came when the rebels destroyed a Ukrainian armoured personnel carrier.

He added that the volleys of fire ended after 7 a.m.

The Donetsk city hall said that three civilians died over the past 24 hours and “the situation in the city is very tense” with artillery heard throughout the night.

The toll was the highest daily figure since a shaky truce went into effect on September 5.
