PORT HARCOURT—Nigerian Navy has intensified its crusade against oil theft in the Niger Delta region  with an approach  it termed “choke points” strategy.

Flag Officer Commanding Naval Training Command, Rear Admiral Goddy Ayankpele, yesterday, during a facility tour of the Nigeria Navy  Basic Training School, Onne, Rivers State, said they were recording huge success with the new strategy.

According to him, they deploy men to choke points (exit routes) on the high sea, adding that so far  six vessels conveying illegal crude had been impounded at these points used as exit routes by oil  thieves out of the nation’s waterways.

“The Navy has done a lot and has put a lot in place to end oil theft. The strategy of attacking and establishing choke points is working, where we know that these illegal bunkerers will follow a particular route.”
