Yuguda laments mass failure in WAEC

Asks School Principals to come up with workable solutions

By Suzan Edeh

Bauchi—GOVERNOR Isa Yuguda  of Bauchi State, has decried the mass failure recorded in the West African Examination Council, WAEC, by students in the state and challenged principals of secondary schools to come up with a workable solution to address the deteriorating state of education.

Governor Yuguda who threw this challenge wondered why in spite of the huge resources invested on education, the schools continued to record poor performance in external examinations.

Addressing the Principals, the Governor recalled that from 2007 to date, government expended about N50 billion in providing infrastructural facilities, text books in core subjects as well as upward review of students feeding allowances by hundred per cent but without corresponding improvement.

He said: “It is disheartening that Bauchi State came second to the last in the Senior Secondary School Examination among the 36 states of the federation. This development calls for concern and   all stakeholders in the state must wake up from their slumber and find a solution to this unacceptable situation, otherwise the educational development may continue to dwindle.

“It is when we take such dogged approach to save our state that a change can be effected. These children are our future generation and if their education foundation is faulty at this stage, then development cannot thrive in the state. Since the state government has already fulfilled its obligation by implementing the teacher’s salary scale and other inducements, stakeholders must also play their role accordingly.”
