CR tops medal table in NDDC athletics championship

The 4th Cross River/Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC South-South All Comers Athletics Championships has ended in Calabar with team Cross River topping the medals table with a total of 122 medals.

Rivers State took the second position with 43 medals while Delta State came 3rd with a total of 49 medals in the 3-day athletics championship.

Declaring the championship closed, the State Commissioner for Youth & Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Ugbe commended the Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke for initiating the Comprehensive Sports Programme which has afforded a platform for the athletes to perform this feat.

The Commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Egwu Egeh expressed appreciation to the Niger Delta Development Commission, co-sponsors of the championship for their support to the initiative and called on other corporate organizations to emulate them.

He said, the State was blessed with young people who will readily take advantage of any opportunities in sports to build their talents to become champions and stated that stakeholders will appreciate efforts in that direction.

The Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the championship, thanked states that participated and assured of a better outing in 2015.

More than 24 teams from all over the country participated in the championship which featured athletes in three categories, the primary, secondary and the elite.

As an added incentive, winners at the championship organized by the Ministry of Youth & Sports Development went home with cash prizes ranging from N2,000.00 to N20,000.00
