Use internet to solve national issues, NiRA challenges FG

BY RICHARD UDOFIA

President Nigeria internet registration association, NIRA, Mrs Mary Uduma, has challenged Nigerian government to embrace internet as a global vehicle to drive e-governance.

This is also as she urged the Nigerian youths to always think e governance in everything they do, being the leaders of tomorrow.

Uduma at this year’s Nigeria Internet Government Forum, NIGF organised for youths and other stakeholders in the industry in Lagos, said that countries all over the world that have good governance and better economies have either in one way or the other, at a given point, introduced internet as a means of solving national issues.

According to her, no nation can attain greatness without the introduction of positive internet activities that will be result oriented.

Taking a look at why Uduma’s suggestions may prove difficult, Goggle representative to Nigeria, Miss Nnenna Nwakama said that internet bundle in Nigeria is quite expensive, and most times users do not seem to use them for positive things.

She however advised the youths, mainly, to desist from using bundle plans on unprofitable things, but to always put them into judicious use.

Nwakanma said that governance cannot be separated from the internet as they both function and complement each other in achieving a set goal.

She argued that many countries of the world including South Africa, Ghana, America, Britain, Holland, France among others, have achieved tremendous leap in their economies through internet governance.

She however noted that though no government in the world has ever provided citizens with everything needed in life, but the Nigerian government can do better than it was doing at the moment if it marries governance with internet.

In his goodwill message, President of Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria, ATCON, Engineer Lanre Ajayi said that rather than youths surfing the internet for pleasure and relaxation, they should focus on addressing issues of how states are being governed, principles surrounding good governance and evaluation of visible policies that will afford the modern day youth to participate in governance through the application of internet apps.

He urged youths to be up and doing in the area of leadership training, as mantle of leadership can fall on them anytime soon. He challenged the youths to get acquainted with the findings released in the final report on the next generation directorate service, an e-government manual.
