NULGE faults appointment of sole administrator for Nnewi North

ONITSHA — The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, yesterday, condemned the recent appointment of a sole administrator for Nnewi North council by Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State.

Following the inability of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, headed by Mr. Sylvester Okonkwo, to have a conclusive council election few months ago in the area, the new governor early last month appointed Chief Emeka Ojukwu Jnr as the sole administrator for Nnewi North.

Speaking with Vanguard, NULGE described the appointment as an aberration and a negation of democratic principles.
”For me, it is not a healthy development in a democratic dispensation but we have to appreciate the fact that the new governor was not there when the local government election was conducted in the state. His predecessor, Mr. Peter Obi through the ANSIEC conducted the said election.

“I believe that in his reasoning, it is better to have a temporary arrangement there till an election is conducted,” the union said.
It appealed to ANSIEC and Governor Obiano to quickly conduct election in Nnewi North council area to enable the people enjoy full democratic dividend.

The union also suggested that the Independent National Electoral Commission took over the conduct of council poll as it was in the past, to prevent the present situation where state governors decided when to conduct local government election in their respective states.
