House is cheap at the dump site – Residents

By ANOZIE EGOLE

According to a residents at Igando road dumpsite,  “life in that area is not only shameful, but very dangerous to health as the odour which oozes out  of the refuse dump at Igando road is very bad. We suffer so much here. For instance, most times in the evening, you cannot stand the odour that comes out from the dustbin. Sometimes, I feel like running away from here. In the evenings, the odour is usually so much that, sometimes it is very embarrassing to ask your friends especially colleagues to visit you.

“All I am doing now is to know if there is a way I can pack out of this place and look for somewhere that is better,” he said.

“I see no reason why house rents in this area should be high. We live almost at the dustbin and we pay close to nothing.

“When it rains, you will not want to come miles close to this place because of the stench oozing out of the refuse dump.  We have no choice than to live and ask God for a positive change in future. I have stayed in this place for over two years. I  intend to move out of this environment this year for the sake of  my kids,”  he stated.

While his colleagues are complaining about the challenges of living in a slum, another resident,  Suleman Yusuf, said living in the area is a saving grace as he spends nothing on house rent. As far as he is concerned, he cannot remember the last time he paid for rent as he lives in a house close to the dust bin where he pays no rent.

“I have no regrets living here, I do not pay any house rent here. The only complaint I have about this place is that the odour which is  much during the rainy season and at nights. I intend to pack out of this place when I want to get married,” Yusuf said.
