NIGERIAN Nurses and Mid-wives have been urged to always apply humanitarian attitude which the profession is known for, while carrying out their duties, in promoting the development of the health sector.
Speaking in Lagos at the 7th edition of the Nigerian Nursing Excellence Awards, NNEA, Director of Hospital Services in the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Patricia Osinubi, stressed the important roles nurses and mid-wives play in ensuring a vibrant healthcare sector.
Osinubi, who represented the Minister of Health stated: “We need to stop the blaming game, the condition of the hospital should not be an excuse for losing the sight of the values on which this profession rest.”
Further, she stated: “Nursing should be seen as a calling to serve humanity and not just a career. What is most important is not your qualification but how much understanding you have about exhibiting kindness, patience, empathy, sacrifice and endurance even in the face of unfavourable working environment.
“Because this is a caring profession, it requires that the practitioners display these qualities always,” Osinubi added.
In her remark, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, of the Lagos Central Senatorial District who was represented by Rev. Funmi Braithwaite, Secretary, Surulere LGA, stressed the need for nurses to look beyond academic qualification and deliver service to the best of their ability.
