OIL and gas entrepreneur, Joe Nobi Oduah has enjoined Nigerians to take to water sport as it has a lot of recreational activities and also potentials to make the country proud at the Olympics.
Mr. Oduah was speaking at the Lagos Yacht Club, where his company Resource Churchill sponsored a boat race last weekend.
He submitted that most Nigerians were under the impression that water sport was elitists, whereas it was quite open and potentially enjoyable to all classes of people.
“Nigeria is a country blessed with a lot of water body. But unfortunately most Nigerians don’t make use of it for recreation. Africans tend to pander to physical sports, but they show little interest in those that is mentally engaging. They see sailing as elitists sport.
“This is not so, it is quite easy to develop an interest in these sports. It is my fervent hope that more Nigerians take to the water, apart from recreational purposes, we have resources and potentials to do well at the Olympics.
“In fact I am looking forward to seeing a Nigerian sailing and kayak team at the Olympics.”
He said his company decided to sponsor the boat race as a way of giving back to the society, adding that he will be more than happy to contribute to the development of the sport, if the government creates an enabling environment for private concerns to be involved in sports management.
