Yenagoa—Residents of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, have stepped up efforts to check flooding in the state  capital by mobilising to clear blocked drainages in their neighbourhood.

This followed Sunday heavy downpour experienced across the state, which caused many homes in low zones to be submerged.

Though Nigerian Metrological Agency, NIMET, had predicted heavy rainfall in the country, not many took the warning serious until the Sunday deluge, which sacked several homes.

Residents have been trooping out in their hundreds in the last three days to clear the blocked drainages in their neighbourhood.

They were also seen constructing artificial channels for water to flow to the natural canals in Yenagoa.

It was also observed that the construction firms handling road projects in Yenagoa, which were blamed for the blocking of some of the existing drainages had commenced their clearing.

A resident of Biogbolo, a Yenagoa suburb, who gave his name as Eladebi Jones, said that the Sunday downpour was a clear signal of more troubled days ahead.
