Barely seven days after Lagos State Government commenced disbursement of cheques to the 233 identified victims of the 2008 Ijegun pipeline explosion, in Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area, LCDA, no fewer than 100 new alleged victims, weekend surfaced, demanding for compensation.

The alleged victims, Vanguard gathered, stormed the disbursement centre with different burns, demanding inclusion in the compensation exercise.

It would be recalled that Governor Babatunde Fashola, recently approved the fund five years after the explosion, which reportedly killed over 19 residents of the council

Chairman of the Ijegun Pipeline Explosion victims, Mr. Olaseni Shoewu, while briefing newsmen during the disbursement of cheques to the last set of the 233 victims, said about 100 not captured in the initial list had showed up.

According to him, “when they realised that the state government was ready to fulfill its promises, they showed up with their burns to signify that they were also affected by the explosion.

Shoewu, also a victim of the explosion, was full of praise to the state government for fulfilling its promise, saying “they never believed that government would fulfil its promise but that he was persistent in ensuring that tokens was given to the victims.”

Also speaking, General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said that the 100 who showed up after five years were those who didn’t associate with the community and failed to show up during the enumeration exercise for them to be captured.
