Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi stated that the result of the friendly match against Mexico on May 31 in Houston, USA will boost his team’s preparation for the ‘swim or sink’ World Cup qualifying match against Kenya on June 5.
Keshi said that he was working to get a good result from that match adding that the Mexico game will test his team’s intention to win in Nairobi. The Eagles have not played any match since drawing with Kenya in Calabar.
“We need to continue and in fact we are continuing from where we stopped in South Africa where we won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. We hope to continue to build a strong team that would be able to withstand the test of time,” Keshi said.
“I believe this team has the capacity and talents to get to the level that we want them to be. The performance of the new players in the match against Mexico will give us more options in the team.
“A good result in this match will put us in good stead for the important 2014 World Cup qualifying match first against Kenya in Nairobi and the second one also away to Namibia. So we need to play well and play good against Mexico to toughen us ahead of the qualifiers,” Keshi declared.
Meanwhile, Keshi defended his choice of Werder Bremen striker Joseph Akpala ahead of Michael Eneramo to replace injured Emmanuel Emenike.
“I have seen Akpala play and I know what he can do on the pitch. Unfortunately I have not been able to watch Emenike play, but I have spoken with him and he understands that his time would come.”
The Super Eagles depart ed Abuja Thursday for a training camp in Germany with players from the domestic league, while the foreign pros are expected to join up next week.
