APGA crisis: Obi lacks power to convene national convention – INEC

By JOHNBOSCO AGBAKWURU

ABUJA — THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday, turned down the request by Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State to convene a national convention for the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, which has been in crisis leading to its factionalisation.

It was gathered that Governor Obi had written a letter to the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega requesting for authority to convene a national convention of the party.

The letter came on the heels of the emergence of about three different factions with different chairmen, all claiming to be the authentic Chairman of APGA.

A High Court in sitting in Enugu had recently sacked the APGA National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh and immediately Governor Obi convened a meeting with some party elders loyal to him to appoint the National Chairman of Citizens Popular Party, CPP, Maxi Okwu as the interim Chairman.

It was gathered that Obi in an attempt to regularise Okwu’s interim chairmanship appointment, wrote to INEC seeking for permission  to convene a national convention.
