Ekiti Speaker faces impeachment threat

By Gbenga Ariyibi

Ado Ekiti — SPEAKER of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr. Olawale Omirin may have incurred the wrath of his colleagues who are said to be perfecting plans to impeach him over allegation of mistrust, high handedness, arrogance and too much closeness to the executive arm of government.

The 26-member House with 24  from ACN and two from  the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is now said to be sharply divided into two camps of pro and anti Omirin.

The aggrieved members of the House are claiming that Omirin’s “closeness to the executive arm of government” had been denying  them of certain benefits.

The group  is said to have been meeting regularly in one of the hotels owned by a former lawmaker in the state and outside the state to perfect the planned impeachment.

One of the anti Omirin legislator, who spoke with the Vanguard on condition of anonymity, complained bitterly that Omirin’s romance with the executive had been his  undoing “as he is using his influence to block them to get certain benefits.”

According to him, the last straw that broke the carmel’s back was last December when the legislators wrote to the executive requesting for N66million  to celebrate Christmas and New Year festivities.

The lawmakers were said to have been disappointed that the governor only approved N53million, lamenting that majority of the lawmakers had not benefitted from the Speaker’s romance with the executive.
