Amaize faults CJN on judges’ overseas travels

By GABRIEL  ENOGHOLASE

BENIN—A retired Edo State High Court judge, Justice Roland Amaize, has described as strange, the recent comment by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Alooma Mukhtar, that incessant overseas trips by judges were a contributory factor negating judges’ performance.

“The directive, to me, is outlandish. If anything, it is simply a power play, the effect of which will add no value to the current state of affairs. I  call for the directive to be reviewed in order to remove the difficulties associated with its current  form. In fact, I call for its discardment. It is in bad taste,” Amaize said.

Speaking, yesterday, in Benin, at a special court valedictory session held in his honour by Edo State Judiciary, he said: “Unless there is a drastic turn around, especially in the area of selection and consideration of candidates for appointment as judges at all levels, we, as a nation, stand to compromise the future of our judiciary.”
