Focus on people if you must succeed, expert tells public analysts

LAGOS — Director, Onshore Services, Fugro Nigeria Ltd,Port Harcourt, Mr Adindu Ogamba, yesterday  said that a successful analytical laboratory must be pre-occupied with people rather than profit.

He said this during a pre-induction lecture he delivered on “Making a Success of Laboratory Business” at the 2012 Induction and Annual Luncheon of the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria (IPAN) in
Lagos.

Adindu said when a business shows care for its customers, it has better prospects than one which has its focus on profit and fleecing people.

He said: “Major more on customers and not on profit if you want to succeed. Give away more of your profit rather than lose customers. Look at what the competition is doing and improve on it; engage your
team in the process of mind-mapping and set goals for you and your staff,” he said.

He urged public analysts to ensure they employ people with requisite knowledge of the discipline and to apply adequate quality control needed for daily monitoring of batch to batch analysis performance for effective practice.

He said that since inception, laboratory practice had played a vital role in human development, noting that its usefulness in the Nigerian environment was yet to be fully explored.

Earlier, the President of IPAN, Mr Ganiyu Sanni, urged the inductees to conduct themselves as true professionals worthy of membership of the institute.

Registrar and CEO of IPAN, Prof. David Oluleye congratulated the inductees and called on them to ensure they know their rights, privileges and obligations as they go into practice.

He urged them to be very careful and to adhere strictly to the code of ethics of the profession as “the lives of many people depend on what you certify as fit for people to consume.”

About 40 members were inducted with their certificates, practice licenses and stamps given them. The new members included Mr Christian Eboh, Head of Regulatory and Enforcement and Mrs Mutiat Olawuyi of the Library Services of the Institute’s secretariat.
