BY OLASUNKANMI AKONI
As part of efforts to maintain discipline and decorum among the rank and file of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, officials, the management of the organization has handed out various punitive measures to some of the staff that were found wanting in the course of duty.

The management of LASTMA in response to various complaints from members of the public and to reposition the organization for better service delivery, constituted administrative panels to look into the various cases of staff indiscipline.

This is to stem the tide of misconduct, maintain discipline and make all the staff alive to their official responsibility, a source within the organisation told Vanguard.

While inaugurating the administrative panel at the LASTMA Headquarters at Oshodi, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Babatunde Edu advised the panel members to handle all the discipline matters professionally and dispassionately as the state government would not tolerate any act of indiscipline or misconduct capable of tarnishing its image.

The panel process is a continuous one and had 25 LASTMA staff recommended for various punishment, including dismissal, demotion and suspension while some cases were referred to higher authority for further consideration and discipline.

Reiterating government’s huge investment in the enormous resources in training and welfare of the officials, Edu vowed that LASTMA authourity would not tolerate any member of the organization that engages in unwholesome act capable of eroding public confidence in the organisation.

however, the various cases of indiscipline looked into by the administrative panel for which  25 staff were sanctioned include cases of   fighting, corruption, performance of illegal duty, dereliction of duty, absence from duty without permission and infringing on the rights of others.

In the same vein, the state has begun leadership and career evaluation training programme for all the LASTMA officials and Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI, in Lagos State.

The training is to instill discipline among the members of staff and also improve LASTMA working relationship with the public.

It would be recalled that the state government has also introduced regular mentorship as a re- orientation for LASTMA staff in order to achieve better service delivery in the area of traffic management.
