Gov’s Cup II: Nigerians in line of fire

Nigerian tennis players will literary be in the line of fire today when second round matches of the Governor’s Cup Futures II take centre stage at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

After an easy ride in their first round games on Monday and yesterday, most of the Nigerians will be playing against seeded players of the tournament.

In the men’s singles, Shehu Lawal will have his hands full when he confronts seed three, Kento Takeuchi of Japan on the Lord Rumens Centre Court.  Adamu Sanni faces sixth seed, Egyptian Sherif Sabry, while Clifford Enosoregbe will goes to war with seed two, Ruan Roelofse of South Africa. It will be a miracle if the Nigerian trio qualify for the quarterfinal, taking place tomorrow.

In the women’s singles, Fatimah Abinu is crying for vengeance when she battles top seed Nina Bratchikova from Russia, while Blessing Anuna confronts Chanels Simmonds from South Africa.

The tie between China’s Jia-Jing Lu with a teenage girl from Madagascar, Zarah Razafimahatratra will be a delight to watch today Razafimahatratra, a consistent product of junior tournaments in Africa is poised to repeat a stunning performance she put against Number 93 ranked Bratchikova in the first leg.
