Maternal mortality: Northern women safer without circumcision, says YWCAA

By EGUFE YAFUGBORHI, PH

National President of the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) Mrs. Hwongchun Majak, has said the absence of female circumcision in all of Northern Nigeria has helped the course of fighting maternal mortality in that region of the country.

Mrs. Majak made this conclusion on Thursday in Abua, Rivers State, against the backdrop of the associated harms experienced by women subjected to the unpopular culture of painful incision on the female organ where it is practised.

The YWCA National President was speaking at an interactive session with community women in the ongoing nationwide advocacy organised by the Christian group towards stemming maternal mortality and advancing sexual education among women and teenagers in Nigeria.

“The negativities associated with this female circumcision are doing a lot of harm to our women including contributing to the high rate of maternal mortality. I thank God that we, women in the North, all 19 states are not involved in it. We are happy and safer for it”, the Jos born YWCA leader remarked.
