As part of efforts to encourage individuals and organisations supporting vulnerable members of society, Abubakar Sadiq Omar, mni, has received commendation for his reported interventions in disability inclusion, women empowerment, skills acquisition and educational support for vulnerable girls across Nigeria.

The commendation was contained in a tribute by the Founder of the Edoka Suleiman Trauma Care Centre Initiative, Mrs Ene Dorothy Ede, who described Omar as a development advocate whose initiatives had created opportunities for vulnerable members of society.

Ede said she first became aware of Omar through the Otudere app, a job portal and skills acquisition platform developed by the Steron Community Development Foundation to provide employment and skills opportunities for persons with disabilities.

According to her, the platform represents an effort to promote inclusion and enable persons with disabilities to overcome barriers to economic participation.

She also highlighted Omar’s reported support for widows through a fund established for women in Madobi and Garin Mallam in Kano, as well as another initiative in Kano Central focused on women empowerment and skills acquisition.

Ede further cited a back-to-school initiative for girls in Wasa and Takushara who had experienced unplanned pregnancies, saying the intervention provided beneficiaries with an opportunity to return to school and continue their education.

She said the initiatives informed the decision of the Edoka Suleiman Trauma Care Centre Initiative to present Omar with a letter of commendation for his contributions to vulnerable communities.
Ede also noted Omar’s involvement in the African Disability Summit, describing the platform as an avenue for advancing inclusion and strengthening advocacy for persons with disabilities.

She said her subsequent interactions with Omar reinforced her view of him as an individual committed to addressing social challenges, particularly those affecting women and vulnerable groups.

According to Ede, the Edoka Suleiman Trauma Care Centre Initiative is looking forward to collaborating with Omar on programmes aimed at addressing trauma and improving the wellbeing of vulnerable people.

She called for greater recognition and support for individuals contributing to community development, noting that interventions focused on education, economic empowerment and disability inclusion could help expand opportunities and promote dignity among disadvantaged Nigerians.
