SOKOTO — Sokoto State University (SSU) will confer degrees on no fewer than 6,000 graduates during its 8th Combined Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, marking the return of the institution’s convocation after a seven-year break.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Bello Yarima, disclosed this on Monday during a pre-convocation press conference in Sokoto, where he unveiled activities lined up for the week-long celebration.

Describing the event as a major milestone in the university’s history, Yarima said extensive preparations had been concluded to ensure a world-class ceremony befitting the institution’s growing reputation for academic excellence.

According to him, the 6,000 graduates were drawn from the university’s five faculties and represent several academic sessions, reflecting years of sustained commitment to teaching, learning and research.

He disclosed that a number of outstanding students would graduate with First Class honours, stressing that the university had taken deliberate steps to preserve the credibility and integrity of the graduation process.

“We are taking our time to organise a world-class event. The convocation is not just a celebration of academic achievement but also a reflection of the university’s commitment to excellence,” he said.

The convocation will also feature the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on distinguished Nigerians in recognition of their contributions to education, public service, economic development and nation-building.

Yarima said the recipients were selected strictly on merit and for their outstanding service to society.

“These are distinguished individuals who have contributed immensely to the educational and socio-economic development of Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi states, as well as other parts of Nigeria. They deserve recognition for their invaluable contributions,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor commended Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, who is the Visitor to the university, for his continued moral and financial support towards the institution’s growth.

He revealed that the governor increased funding for the convocation after reviewing the university’s budget proposal, describing the gesture as a demonstration of his commitment to the institution.

“The Governor has remained a true father and benefactor of Sokoto State University. His support continues to inspire confidence and progress within the institution,” Yarima said.

He also paid tribute to former Sokoto State Governor and founder of the university, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, describing him as a dependable pillar of support whose interventions have continued to improve infrastructure and academic development.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Wamakko facilitated the expansion of the university library through one of his constituency projects, adding that the project is nearing completion and will significantly enhance teaching, learning and research.

Looking ahead, Yarima unveiled plans to transform Sokoto State University into a leading centre for innovation and entrepreneurship over the next decade.

He said the institution is aligning its academic programmes with emerging national development priorities by equipping students with practical skills that will promote self-reliance and economic growth.

“Our goal is to build a university that produces graduates who are not only employable but also capable of creating jobs and contributing meaningfully to national development,” he said.

Yarima attributed the university’s achievements to the dedication and professionalism of its management and staff, whose collective efforts, he noted, have sustained the institution’s steady rise in Nigeria’s higher education sector.

The convocation is expected to attract top government officials, academics, traditional rulers, industry leaders, alumni and other stakeholders from across the country.
