The Institute of Security Nigeria (ISN) has endorsed a newly published book, Military Transformational Leadership in Action: The Buratai Era, describing it as a major contribution to security scholarship and a comprehensive account of the leadership reforms and institutional transformation undertaken during the tenure of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd.).

In a statement signed by its Deputy President and Chief Executive, Adebayo Akinade, the Institute commended the author, Dr. Mohammed Abubakar, for documenting what it described as one of the most transformative periods in the history of the Nigerian Army between 2015 and 2021.

According to the Institute, the publication provides an in-depth analysis of Buratai’s leadership philosophy and the reforms introduced to reposition the Nigerian Army at the height of the Boko Haram insurgency and other emerging security threats.

The statement noted that the book examines key initiatives implemented during the period, including the adaptation of military doctrine to confront asymmetric warfare, improvements in training, logistics, equipment and command structures, as well as programmes aimed at enhancing troop welfare, morale and civil-military relations.

It said the reforms have made the Buratai era an important reference point for studies on crisis leadership, institution-building and sustaining operational effectiveness under intense security pressure.

The Institute also acknowledged Buratai’s continued public service following his retirement from the military, noting that his current assignment as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin reflects the strategic leadership principles that characterised his military career.

According to the statement, his diplomatic role further demonstrates the link between security, diplomacy, national resilience and institutional development.

The ISN also expressed appreciation for Buratai’s mentorship and patronage, saying his guidance has strengthened the Institute’s research, policy advocacy and professional development initiatives.

“The Institute deeply appreciates General Buratai’s patronage. His leadership, mentorship and strategic guidance have shaped the Institute’s research, training and policy advocacy on asymmetric and hybrid threats, plural policing and national resilience,” the statement said.

It added that Buratai’s leadership continues to inspire security professionals, researchers and emerging leaders across the country.

The Institute further described Dr. Abubakar’s book as a valuable resource for military officers, policymakers, researchers and students seeking to understand leadership, institutional reforms and resilience within Nigeria’s security architecture.

Reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the nation’s security sector, the ISN said it would continue to promote transformational leadership, policy research and institutional capacity-building under Buratai’s patronage as part of efforts to enhance Nigeria’s resilience against evolving security challenges.
