Contemporary ceramic artist and sculptor, Umar Abdulrasheed, has been nominated for the 2026 Eko Heritage Award in the category of Eko Outstanding Visual Artist of the Year for ceramics and sculpture, in recognition of his contributions to visual arts and the use of art to promote climate change and environmental awareness.

The Eko Heritage Awards, endorsed by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

Abdulrasheed, whose work explores themes of identity, cultural heritage, balance and human connection, has earned recognition for blending traditional ceramic craftsmanship with contemporary artistic expression. Through his sculptures and ceramic installations, he transforms clay into works that reflect history, memory and social realities.

His artistic career has taken him across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa, where his exhibitions have sparked conversations on heritage, migration, belonging and the role of material culture in contemporary society.

He is also a member of the UK Craft Potters Association, reflecting his standing within the international ceramics community and his commitment to advancing pottery as both an artistic and cultural practice.

Beyond his studio practice, Abdulrasheed has used his work to advocate for climate change awareness and environmental sustainability. Through exhibitions and public engagements, he highlights the relationship between humanity and nature, encouraging conversations on environmental responsibility.

The artist is also recognised as the first to stage a dedicated ceramic exhibition in Nigeria’s South-West region, a milestone that expanded the visibility and appreciation of ceramic art in the area. Through exhibitions, collaborations and community-based initiatives, he continues to promote contemporary ceramics while advancing cultural and environmental consciousness.

Abdulrasheed is nominated alongside David Olowoake, Mutiu Adelani, Julius Nwobi and Bunmi Fashina in the highly competitive category.

The Eko Heritage Awards are presented annually to recognise individuals and organisations that have contributed significantly to preserving and promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage, with the Outstanding Visual Artist category celebrating artists whose works showcase the country’s rich cultural identity and creative excellence.
