ABUJA: The Nigeria Democratic Congress NDC has unveiled Chidi Mike Anyanwu as its candidate for the Okigwe North Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, setting the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched contest in one of Imo State’s most politically significant federal constituencies.

Anyanwu emerged at the conclusion of the party’s nomination process, securing the mandate of delegates and stakeholders across the constituency, which comprises Isiala Mbano, Onuimo and Okigwe Local Government Areas.

Party officials described the process as competitive but peaceful, with Anyanwu winning the confidence of members who view him as a candidate capable of broadening the NDC’s appeal across the three local government areas.

Speaking after his emergence, Anyanwu thanked party members for their trust and pledged to build a campaign anchored on the needs of ordinary citizens, with emphasis on job creation, youth empowerment, infrastructure development, education and economic inclusion.

“The people of Okigwe North deserve a representative who listens, engages and delivers,” he said. “This campaign will be about communities, families, businesses, farmers, women and young people whose voices must be heard at the national level.”

He added that elections should provide citizens an opportunity to redefine their future through leaders who understand their challenges and are prepared to translate public aspirations into legislative action.

Political observers say the contest for Okigwe North is expected to attract considerable attention, given growing demands across the constituency for stronger legislative advocacy, improved access to federal opportunities and greater attention to local development priorities.

For the NDC, Anyanwu’s emergence represents not only the selection of a candidate but the beginning of a broader effort to persuade voters that a new approach to representation is both possible and necessary.
