How childhood drawing, dreams shaped my sculpture career — Steve Ekpenisi

For Nigerian sculptor Ekpenisi Steve Ucheka, a lifelong interest in art that began in childhood has developed into a professional career in metal sculpture spanning nearly two decades.

Steve said he discovered his creative abilities at an early age, noting that he was drawing and expressing himself artistically before he learned how to write. He added that his interest in art did not fade with time but instead became stronger as he grew older.

He also said imagination and dreams played a role in his creative process, explaining that he often visualised sculptures and artistic ideas while sleeping and would wake up determined to bring them to life.

Although he had been involved in art from his early years, Steve said 2008 marked a turning point when he formally began working as a professional sculptor, specialising in metal sculpture.

Since then, he has built a career around sculpture, producing works that he says are aimed at reflecting African cultural experiences and challenging misconceptions about African traditions.

Steve, popularly known as “The Iron Bender,” said he continues to work in sculpture and remains involved in mentoring younger artists interested in the field.
