Adopt payroll tech or risk stagnation, expert warns Nigerian SMEs

Small and Medium Enterprises, SMEs, in Nigeria have been charged to embrace modern payroll and employee management technology or risk being weighed down by rising costs, regulatory pressure and staff dissatisfaction.

Speaking on the future of SME operations in the country, Terry Ebieto, Founder of payroll and HR platform, Every27.com, said too many businesses were still clinging to manual payroll processes and fragmented record-keeping, despite the damage to efficiency and growth.

“Many businesses underestimate the impact of payroll inefficiencies and poor bookkeeping on overall performance. Delayed salary payments, payroll errors, and inadequate employee records can affect staff morale, productivity, and long-term business stability,” Ebieto said.

He noted that while Nigerian entrepreneurs often focus on sales and customer acquisition, internal systems that keep a business running smoothly were frequently neglected.

Industry observers say payroll has moved beyond being a mere finance function. Modern systems now automate salary processing, tax and pension deductions, compliance reporting, and employee data management, while integrating digital payments to reduce errors and boost transparency.

Ebieto warned that manual systems become unmanageable as companies scale, exposing them to financial and operational risks.

“Businesses that intend to scale successfully must invest in systems that provide accuracy, transparency, and efficiency. Payroll is no longer just about paying salaries; it is about supporting organizational growth,” he stated.

Beyond payroll, he also highlighted the role of digital employee management platforms in handling recruitment, onboarding, attendance, leave, benefits and performance tracking. Such tools, he said, give business owners real-time workforce data for better decision-making.

Cash flow remains another major headache for SMEs. Many generate revenue but face delays in customer payments, making it hard to meet salary obligations. To bridge the gap, payroll finance solutions are gaining ground, allowing businesses to access short-term funding for salaries while awaiting receivables.

“Payroll finance is becoming an important business tool in an environment where cash flow fluctuations can significantly affect organizational performance,” Ebieto said.

Ebieto said technology would allow entrepreneurs to cut administrative burdens and focus on expansion and innovation.

“The future competitiveness of Nigerian SMEs will depend largely on the quality of their internal systems and their willingness to embrace digital solutions,” he said.

As the business environment evolves, experts maintain that operational excellence backed by technology will remain the key driver of sustainable growth.

“The future belongs to businesses that invest in efficiency, accountability, and digital transformation,” one stakeholder said.
