Babalakin & Co. has completed the judging phase of its 2026 Art Competition and Exhibition, marking a major milestone in its efforts to support emerging artists and strengthen Nigeria’s creative ecosystem.
The annual initiative, now in its second edition, is designed to discover, promote and reward young artistic talents across the country while providing them with opportunities for professional growth.
A six-member panel of judges comprising Dotun Sulaiman, Mairo Bashir, Duke Asidere, Iyeyinwa Momah, Kola Aina and Nana Aumah Sonoiki recently convened to assess entries submitted by artists from different parts of Nigeria.
The judges reviewed works inspired by this year’s theme, “Japa to Japada: Beyond Borders, Within Boundaries,” and evaluated submissions based on creativity, originality, technical excellence and storytelling.
According to the organisers, the judging session featured extensive deliberations as panel members considered a wide range of exceptional artworks reflecting contemporary realities, personal experiences and societal issues.
The firm said the quality of submissions demonstrated the depth of artistic talent in Nigeria and reinforced the need for platforms that encourage creative expression and innovation.
Beyond recognising artistic excellence, the competition forms part of Babalakin & Co.’s Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for artists, promoting sustainability and supporting the long-term development of the arts sector.
The initiative was conceived by the firm’s Managing Partner, Mr. Olawale Akoni, SAN, as a reflection of the firm’s belief in the transformative power of art to inspire, preserve culture, challenge perspectives and stimulate meaningful conversations within society.
As part of efforts to support the long-term success of participants, the law firm said finalists would receive reference materials to aid artistic research as well as basic training on contracts and image rights through its Creative Industries Practice.
The training is expected to expose emerging artists to critical legal and commercial issues affecting the creative industry, including intellectual property protection, licensing arrangements, contract negotiations, brand partnerships and other business-related matters.
Babalakin & Co. noted that the initiative is designed not only to showcase talent but also to equip artists with the knowledge required to build sustainable careers in the creative sector.
The winning entries will be unveiled during the Babalakin & Co. Art Competition and Exhibition scheduled for July 3, 2026.
Guests at the event will have the opportunity to view the shortlisted artworks and witness the announcement of the competition’s winners.
The firm reaffirmed its commitment to promoting creativity and supporting the next generation of artistic talents, noting that meaningful corporate citizenship extends beyond business to include investments in culture, community development and the arts.
It added that the forthcoming exhibition promises to be a celebration of creativity, excellence and artistic expression, bringing together artists, clients, stakeholders and members of the public.
