BTY Foundation equips 50 Oyo school teachers with digital skills

Brace Up The Young (BTY) Foundation for Children Learning and Community Development has trained 50 public school teachers from Government College Ibadan on how to use Artificial Intelligence in classrooms, a move aimed at equipping educators with practical skills for AI-driven teaching, lesson planning, assessment, and classroom management.

According to the foundation, the training is in partnership with Purdue University College of Education in the United States of America and Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Nigeria.

The training, titled “Empowering Teachers for the AI-Driven Classroom,” was designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and practical skills required to integrate Artificial Intelligence into teaching, lesson planning, assessment, and classroom management.

The initiative brought together education experts from Purdue University and education stakeholders from the Oyo State Ministry of Education to expose teachers to emerging AI tools that can improve teaching effectiveness and enhance student learning outcomes.

Throughout the training, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, practical AI-powered educational tools, prompt engineering techniques, AI-assisted lesson planning, and ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in schools. Teachers also engaged in practical sessions in which they developed lesson plans and classroom materials using AI tools, while learning to adapt generated content to local curriculum requirements and learner needs.

The Founder and Executive Director of Brace Up The Young Foundation, Mr. Obasanjo Fajemirokun, described the training as an important investment in the future of education. “The future of education will be shaped by how well teachers adapt to emerging technologies. Artificial Intelligence is not here to replace teachers; rather, it is a tool that can support teachers in becoming more effective, creative, and impactful. Through this programme, we are empowering teachers with practical skills that will help them prepare learners for a rapidly changing world.”

Participants expressed enthusiasm throughout the training, with many describing the sessions as eye-opening and highly relevant to modern classroom practice. Several teachers indicated that they had previously used AI tools casually but gained a deeper understanding of how such tools could support lesson preparation, classroom instruction, assessment development, and learner engagement. The programme also received strong support from the Oyo State Ministry of Education. Representatives from the Basic Education and Quality Assurance Departments participated in both phases of the training, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to teacher development and educational innovation.

Speaking at the conclusion of the physical training, the Director, Quality Assurance Department, Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Bello Ademola, commended the initiative and encouraged teachers to apply the knowledge gained within their classrooms.

“This training represents the type of innovation our education system needs. Teachers are at the center of educational transformation, and equipping them with digital skills and AI knowledge will enhance teaching quality and improve students’ learning experiences in Oyo State. We encourage teachers to put these skills into practice and serve as champions of AI innovation within our schools.”

Dr. Amber Neal-Stanley, an Assistant Professor of Curriculum Studies in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Purdue University, USA, also encouraged teachers to use AI ethically and to ensure they always protect their students’ data.

With growing interest from educators and education stakeholders, the success of the programme has laid the foundation for future collaborations, expanded teacher training opportunities, and continued research on the role of Artificial Intelligence in improving teaching and learning outcomes across Nigeria.
