For Adewale Owolabi Arigbabu, the journey into the construction and paint industry began with creativity, determination, and a willingness to learn. Today, he is the Creative Director and Chief Executive Officer of Cogent Paint, a Nigerian paint manufacturing company focused on delivering quality coatings and finishing solutions to homeowners, builders, and construction professionals.

Adewale, who studied Computer Science at Ogun State Polytechnic, spent much of his early life in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, where he also received part of his education. Although his academic background was in technology, his entrepreneurial path eventually led him into the construction sector.

His entry into the industry began about six years ago with landscaping and the installation of decorative paving floors (stamp concrete), where he became known for his distinctive approach to concrete design and installation. According to him, the experience exposed him to opportunities within the building and finishing sector, inspiring him to explore paint production. He also worked with Etisalat as a systems analyst in Dubai.

Five years ago, with the support of his wife, Rita Arigbabu, he ventured into the paint business, starting with small-scale site mixing before gradually expanding into packaged paint production and distribution.

Under his leadership, Cogent Paint has grown into a brand that supplies a range of decorative and protective coatings designed for residential and commercial projects. The company places emphasis on product quality, innovation, and customer service, positioning itself as a reliable partner for contractors, property developers, and homeowners.

Speaking on the company’s philosophy, Adewale said customer satisfaction remains a central focus of the business. He noted that understanding clients’ needs and providing tailored solutions have helped the company build trust and maintain long-term relationships with customers.

“We listen to our customers, understand their vision, and work to provide products that meet their expectations,” he said. “Our goal is not just to sell paint but to help transform spaces through quality finishing solutions.”

Cogent Paint’s product portfolio includes Silk (Soft-Sheen), Pro-Matt Weather Shield Ultra Finish, Pro-Prime Water-Based Primer, Gravitex Ultra Texture, Super Screed Special Wall Putty, Cogent Claire Matt Emulsion, Cogent Wall Putty for both internal and external applications, Cogent Claire Satin, and Super-Screed. Cogent paint waterproofing and also DUALDECOR (subsidiary of cogent), which specializes in decorative paint such as Microcement, Travertino, and other decorative paint

As Nigeria’s construction sector continues to grow, Adewale believes local manufacturers have an important role to play in providing quality products that meet industry standards while supporting economic development.

From humble beginnings in site mixing to building a recognised paint brand, his journey reflects the opportunities available to entrepreneurs who combine innovation, persistence, and a commitment to quality service.
