OWERRI — Former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere, has described democracy as a critical driver of sustainable socio-economic and cultural development in Nigeria.

Madumere made the remarks while speaking with journalists in Owerri on Sunday as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and aspirant for the Imo East Senatorial District urged Nigerians to embrace democratic values, describing democracy as a pathway to industrial growth, infrastructure development and job creation.

He also called on leaders at all levels of government to place the interests of citizens above personal and political considerations, stressing the importance of accountability, transparency, inclusiveness and effective service delivery.

Reflecting on Democracy Day, Madumere urged Nigerians to remember the sacrifices of those who contributed to the country’s democratic journey and to remain committed to strengthening democratic governance.

According to him, Democracy Day symbolizes the resilience of the Nigerian people and their commitment to building a nation founded on justice, equity, freedom and the rule of law.

While acknowledging the progress made since the return to democratic rule, he said there was still a need for greater commitment to good governance, security, economic development and the welfare of citizens.

Madumere reaffirmed his commitment to supporting policies and initiatives aimed at promoting development, creating opportunities for young people, empowering women, strengthening local economies and ensuring effective representation.

He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future and encouraged citizens not to lose faith in the country’s democratic process but to continue participating actively in governance and nation-building.

The former deputy governor also extended his Democracy Day greetings to residents of Owerri Zone, Imo State and Nigerians across the country.

He urged citizens to renew their commitment to democratic ideals and work collectively toward building a society where justice prevails, opportunities are expanded and citizens can pursue a better future. He also called on stakeholders and voters in Imo State to support initiatives aimed at advancing the development of Owerri Zone.
