June 12: PDP Reps candidate Amuzu gives free fuel to 600 Abeokuta operators

By James Ogunnaike, Abeokuta

In commemoration of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Chief Toyin Amuzu, has provided free fuel support to no fewer than 600 commercial transport operators across Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

The intervention programme, which lasted two days, saw 200 commercial taxi drivers receive fuel worth ₦10,000 each, while 400 commercial motorcycle riders were given fuel valued at ₦5,000 each, offering relief to beneficiaries amid prevailing economic challenges.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, Amuzu said the initiative was aimed at supporting struggling residents and honouring the sacrifices of late Chief MKO Abiola and other heroes of democracy whose contributions paved the way for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.

According to him, Democracy Day should go beyond remembrance and serve as an opportunity for leaders to demonstrate genuine commitment to the welfare of the people.

“June 12 should not only be a day of remembrance, but also a period for leaders to demonstrate commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of the people. This is my own modest contribution, which I have consistently undertaken over the years, even without holding any political office,” he said.

Amuzu stressed that the essence of democracy lies in improving the lives of citizens and ensuring that governance translates into tangible benefits for the people.

“As we celebrate June 12, we must remember the sacrifices of Chief MKO Abiola and other democracy martyrs who laid down their lives for the democracy we enjoy today. The essence of democracy is the welfare of the people. It is about improving lives and giving hope to the ordinary citizen.”

The PDP chieftain expressed concern over the worsening economic situation in the country, noting that rising living costs, insecurity and shrinking economic opportunities have placed immense pressure on many Nigerians.

“I will not allow my people to suffer in silence. No one can honestly say that things are easy. Families are finding it difficult to put food on the table, transport operators are battling high fuel costs, and small businesses are struggling to survive. While we continue to demand better governance, we must also support one another and provide relief wherever possible,” he stated.

Describing the fuel distribution as a social support initiative, Amuzu said the intervention was designed to help transport operators reduce operational costs, improve productivity and increase daily earnings.

“This support may appear small, but it can make a significant difference. When a driver or rider uses this fuel, it means more trips, more customers and more income. Ultimately, it translates into improved welfare for their families.”

He disclosed that the fuel support programme represents the 16th in a series of humanitarian interventions he has personally sponsored over the years to cushion the effects of economic hardship and improve living conditions within Abeokuta South and neighbouring communities.

Amuzu reaffirmed his commitment to people-oriented leadership, pledging to continue implementing initiatives that directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens.

Beneficiaries of the programme described the gesture as timely and thoughtful, particularly in view of the current economic realities.

Some of the recipients, including commercial drivers and motorcycle operators, said the fuel support would significantly reduce their operational expenses and improve their daily returns.

Community leaders and residents who witnessed the exercise commended Amuzu for what they described as his consistent commitment to grassroots development through practical interventions. They noted that his humanitarian efforts, including the provision of over 20 boreholes across various communities, have positively impacted many lives in Abeokuta South.

Over the years, Amuzu has supported several community-based initiatives, ranging from food assistance and educational support programmes to healthcare interventions, youth empowerment schemes and other social welfare projects targeted at vulnerable groups.

As Nigerians marked another Democracy Day celebration, beneficiaries including Musbau Adisa, Sunday Adejare and Wale Akingbade said the gesture reflected the true spirit of June 12; sacrifice, service to humanity and a commitment to ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach the grassroots.
