The Founder of Motivating African Youths Initiative (MAY-I), Dr. Ogenna Walter Ekwubiri, has called on Nigerians to embrace active citizenship and collective responsibility in building the country they desire, saying the Nigeria of the future must be shaped by the values and actions of its citizens.

Ekwubiri, an entrepreneur, communications strategist, and advocate for youth and women’s development, made the call in a Democracy Day 2026 message where she honoured the sacrifices of Nigerians who contributed to the country’s democratic journey.

She said democracy should not be viewed only as a system of government or the conduct of elections but as a collective commitment to freedom, justice, participation, accountability, and hope.

“Democracy must be measured not only by the conduct of elections but by the quality of life experienced by the people,” Ekwubiri said, noting that democratic governance must translate into improved access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, security, and social justice.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s progress 27 years after the return to democratic rule, she identified economic uncertainty, insecurity, unemployment, declining public trust, and the aspirations of a growing youthful population as some of the challenges confronting the nation.

Ekwubiri described Nigeria’s women and young people as major assets capable of driving innovation, enterprise, leadership, and sustainable development.

She urged citizens to move beyond passive participation and contribute actively to nation-building by engaging leaders, asking constructive questions, and supporting positive change in their communities.

To leaders, she said Democracy Day should serve as a reminder that leadership is a sacred responsibility requiring integrity, competence, compassion, and service.

She also encouraged young Nigerians and women to take up leadership roles, stressing that the country’s future depends on their involvement and contributions.

“The Nigeria of our dreams will not emerge by chance. It will emerge through intentional leadership, responsible citizenship, and a shared commitment to the common good,” she added.
