Mr. Augustine Garri, the newly elected Chairman of Otughievwen (Otu-Jeremi) community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, has begun implementing his development plan for the oil-rich community.

Garri, a former National President of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Alumni Association, was sworn in after winning the community leadership election held on June 3, 2026.

One of his immediate initiatives is the launch of an annual scholarship programme for 12 outstanding science students in WAEC and NECO examinations to support their pursuit of higher education in technology and engineering fields.

He has also commenced repairs on long-neglected electricity transformers to improve power supply in the community.

Speaking during the inauguration, Garri said: “My emergence is purely a victory for the community, not personal. Having given a good account in leadership at higher levels, I decided to step in to address the development challenges in Otu-Jeremi.”

He called on all stakeholders, including government at all levels and companies operating in the area, to support transparent and accountable leadership aimed at improving the welfare of the people.

Garri urged unity among community members and appealed to the media to recognise only the duly elected executive council led by him, which was inaugurated by the Edion-In-Council (Elders Council).

Otughievwen is host to important oil and gas infrastructure, including the Utorogu Gas Plant, but has long grappled with underdevelopment despite its strategic location.

The new chairman expressed confidence that his administration would bring positive change through focused leadership and prudent management of community resources.
