In a ceremony that underscored the enduring bond between Nigeria’s traditional institutions and the business community, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Saturday conferred the prestigious traditional title of 5th Wakilin Ayyukkan Daular Usmaniyya on former President of the Sokoto Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Alhaji Mu’azu Bello Mai Wurno (Garkuwan Magajin Rafi), at the historic Sultan’s Palace in Sokoto.

The event attracted traditional rulers, government officials, business leaders, religious figures and community representatives from across the country.

Speaking at the turbaning ceremony, the Sultan said the honour was in recognition of Mai Wurno’s contributions to community development, philanthropy and economic advancement in Sokoto State and Nigeria.

“Traditional titles are not merely symbols of prestige; they are responsibilities. We honour individuals who have distinguished themselves through service to humanity, support for their communities and contributions to national development,” the Sultan said.

He urged the new title holder to continue fostering cooperation between traditional institutions, the business community and government, noting that national development requires collaboration among key stakeholders.

“Our nation needs patriotic citizens who can deploy their resources, experience and influence for the common good. We expect the new title holder to continue supporting initiatives that promote peace, economic prosperity and social cohesion,” he added.

Responding, Mai Wurno expressed appreciation to the Sultanate Council and the people of Sokoto for the recognition.

“I am deeply humbled by this honour bestowed upon me by His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto. This title is not only a recognition of my contributions but also a call to greater service,” he said.

He dedicated the honour to his family, associates and members of the business community, pledging continued support for initiatives that promote commerce, agriculture, investment and youth empowerment.

“Nigeria’s future lies in productive enterprise, education, innovation and peaceful coexistence. I will continue to support efforts aimed at creating opportunities for young people and improving livelihoods in our communities,” he added.

Guests at the ceremony described the recognition as a reflection of Mai Wurno’s contributions to entrepreneurship, economic development and community service.

They also highlighted the role of traditional institutions in promoting values of service, leadership, accountability and social cohesion.

The ceremony concluded with prayers for peace, stability and prosperity in Sokoto State and Nigeria.
