Suntan beach management dismisses security scare reports, reaffirms safety of visitors

By Esther Onyegbula

The management of Suntan Beach Resort, Badagry, has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting a security scare at the popular tourist destination, insisting that the incident in question was a routine security operation that posed no threat to visitors or staff.

Reacting to narratives surrounding a viral video linked to the incident, the Director of Suntan Beach, Pastor Wheto Mesharck, described the reports as misleading and capable of creating unnecessary panic among residents, tourists and intending visitors to Badagry.

According to him, the development stemmed from a routine security screening exercise conducted at the resort’s entrance gate, where prohibited items were intercepted from some visitors before they gained access to the facility.

Mesharck explained that the individuals involved arrived at the beach on Sunday, May 31, and during the standard security checks, personnel discovered traditional items locally known as Igbadi, Ifunpa and other charms, as well as knives in their possession.

He said the items were immediately confiscated in line with the resort’s security protocols.
“As part of our security procedures, we do not permit guests to enter the beach with charms, dangerous objects or any prohibited items.
“During the routine checks, some of these items were discovered and immediately confiscated by our security personnel,” he said.

The director stressed that the incident should not be misconstrued as an attempted attack, security breach or any threat to public safety, noting that the resort’s security system functioned exactly as designed.
“To suggest that some people came to the beach to harm visitors or carry out any criminal activity is completely wrong.

“Our security team discovered the items during routine checks, collected them and prevented them from being taken into the facility. That is exactly what our security system is designed to do,” he stated.
Mesharck further disclosed that while some of the affected individuals later returned to retrieve their belongings, others did not come back for the confiscated items.
He maintained that at no time was there panic, disorder or any disruption of activities within the resort, emphasizing that tourists and other visitors continued to enjoy the facility without incident.

“There was no panic at Suntan Beach. Visitors were safe, activities went on as usual and our security personnel handled the situation professionally. The incident only demonstrates that our security measures are working effectively,” he added.

The director also urged members of the public and media practitioners to avoid sensational interpretations of the incident that could create a false impression about the security situation in Badagry.

According to him, Badagry remains a peaceful destination for tourism, recreation and business activities.
He reassured residents, tourists and stakeholders that Suntan Beach Resort remains safe and secure, adding that management would continue to enforce strict security protocols aimed at guaranteeing a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.

The clarification comes amid growing social media discussions over security concerns at public recreational facilities, with the resort management insisting that the incident highlights the effectiveness of its screening procedures rather than any security lapse.
