A civic group, Campaign and Advocate for Good Governance and Ethics (CAGE), has called on opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives to consider Hon. Fred Agbedi for a leadership position within the minority caucus, citing his legislative experience and years of service in the National Assembly.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday, CAGE Chairman, Prince Amiekumor Jr., said the selection of the next minority leadership team would be important for the effectiveness of the opposition caucus and its role in legislative oversight and democratic governance.
According to him, Agbedi’s experience in parliamentary activities and his familiarity with legislative procedures make him a strong contender for any leadership responsibility that may arise within the opposition bloc.
Amiekumor argued that effective minority leadership requires a combination of experience, strategic thinking, and the ability to work with lawmakers from different political and regional backgrounds.
He noted that Agbedi’s years in the House of Representatives have provided him with significant exposure to committee work, legislative debates, policy discussions, and oversight functions.
The CAGE chairman also highlighted Agbedi’s academic background, stating that it could contribute positively to policy analysis and legislative engagement on national issues.
According to the group, leadership within the minority caucus should be focused on strengthening parliamentary accountability, promoting constructive debate, and advancing alternative policy perspectives where necessary.
Amiekumor further stressed the need for unity among opposition lawmakers, saying that consensus-building and cooperation would be essential for the caucus to effectively discharge its responsibilities in the House.
He described Agbedi as a lawmaker with experience in legislative affairs and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to the cohesion and effectiveness of the opposition caucus if entrusted with a leadership role.
The group urged members of the minority caucus to carefully consider experience, competence, and the capacity to foster collaboration as they make decisions regarding their leadership structure.
