The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has called on security agencies across Nigeria to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, demanding urgent action to curb rising insecurity across the country.
In a statement responding to recent abductions in Oyo State and other parts of Nigeria, the Islamic body urged law enforcement agencies to swiftly identify, arrest and prosecute those behind kidnapping, armed robbery, ritual killings and other violent crimes.
The League expressed deep concern over the abduction of pupils and teachers in parts of Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing the incidents as unacceptable and contrary to Islamic teachings on the sanctity of life.
The statement was jointly signed by leading Islamic scholars across Yorubaland, including the Chief Imam of Ekiti State, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere; Chief Imam of Ogun State, Sheikh Saadullah Bamgbola; Chief Imam of Oyo State, Sheikh AbdulGaniy Agbotomokekere; and other senior clerics across the South-West.
The group said the worsening insecurity, especially attacks targeting schoolchildren and innocent citizens, requires urgent and coordinated national response.
It stressed that such acts are “unacceptable, condemnable, and contrary to the teachings of Islam,” which emphasise peace, security and protection of human life.
The League urged security agencies at all levels to intensify operations and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice without delay.
It also called on parents, teachers, religious leaders, youth groups and community stakeholders to remain vigilant and support efforts to protect schools and communities.
In addition, the body announced special prayers and spiritual interventions across Yorubaland for divine assistance in restoring peace and stability.
The League also congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the third anniversary of his administration, praying for wisdom and strength in addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
It acknowledged ongoing reforms including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange adjustments, noting their short-term impact on citizens but expressing hope for long-term national stability.
The statement urged continued cooperation among stakeholders to overcome current difficulties and prayed for lasting peace, security and prosperity across the country.
