AKURE — The Owo Youth General Assembly has commended Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for approving the conversion of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, into the proposed University of Agricultural Science and Technology.
The group described the decision as a major milestone in the educational and socio-economic development of Owo Kingdom and Ondo State.
In a statement by its President, Comrade Temidayo Samson Obadaye, the Assembly said the approval represents a “monumental policy breakthrough” that would reposition Owo as a hub for agricultural research, scientific innovation and technological advancement.
It praised the governor for what it called visionary leadership and commitment to strengthening higher education in the state.
Obadaye said the decision fulfils a long-standing aspiration of the people and reflects deliberate efforts to promote institutional growth, human capital development and economic transformation.
The group noted that the approval would expand educational opportunities, boost research and innovation, attract investment and accelerate development across the state.
While applauding the governor, the Assembly urged him to transmit the necessary Executive Bill to the State House of Assembly for speedy passage into law.
It also called on the governor to engage the National Universities Commission (NUC) to secure approvals and accreditation for the proposed university.
The group stressed that all administrative and regulatory processes should be handled urgently to avoid delays caused by bureaucracy.
It further recommended the immediate appointment of key principal officers, including a Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar and University Librarian, to guide early planning and coordination.
The Assembly proposed a transitional arrangement that would allow the new university to begin operations using existing infrastructure at the polytechnic, while long-term structures are developed.
It said the development represents a “triumph of visionary leadership” with the potential to position the institution as a globally competitive centre for agriculture, science and technology.
The group also congratulated the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, and other stakeholders for their support toward the project, and pledged continued backing for its successful implementation.
