The Grassroots Mobilization Network (GMN), an ADC support group, has backed a petition seeking the recusal of Justice Peter Lifu from a case involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nafiu Bala, which is scheduled for hearing on Wednesday.
The suit was previously before Justice Emeka Nwite before it was reassigned to Justice Lifu.
Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, GMN spokesperson, Mr. Peter Emeka, said the group lacks confidence in Justice Lifu’s ability to adjudicate the matter and urged him to step aside from the case.
“We are asking Justice Lifu to recuse himself from this case and allow another judge to take over,” Emeka said.
He stressed the need for judicial impartiality and argued that opposition parties should be allowed to organize and participate in the democratic process without hindrance.
Emeka also expressed concerns over the reassignment of the case, describing it as a development that could negatively affect opposition politics.
The group further called on opposition parties to unite in defence of democratic principles and political pluralism.
Petitions against judicial officers and applications for recusal are governed by the rules of the National Judicial Council (NJC) and established court procedures.
The matter is scheduled to come up before Justice Peter Lifu on Wednesday.
